Ekornes held an 'Open House' event last week to officially open the plant for sofa production.  The new plant is located in Morganton, North Carolina, and will enhance our service to the network of North American dealers by providing quicker delivery times on Stressless sofas.  Sofa components will be made in Norway and shipped to the new US plant in readiness for sewing and assembly.

The plant in Morganton represents a monumental step for the company, as it is the first Ekornes production facility to open outside of Norway.  Ekornes has six production facilities in Norway, and the establishment of a production facility in North Carolina was initiated by the need for quicker delivery times on Stressless sofas to the expanding US market.  Ekornes already ensures shorter delivery times for Stressless chairs to this market by keeping a stock of the most popular models at the US Sales and Distribution Centre in Somerset, New Jersey.

Ekornes selected North Carolina because of the heritage for furniture production in that state.   In his speech at the official opening, CFO Robert Svendsen drew parallels between the region of Sunnmøre, where Ekornes has five of its six Norwegian factories, and North Carolina: “You have a tradition, you have culture, you have workmanship."

11 employees will receive full time training as from Monday January 16, and Ekornes hopes to have at least 40 employees by the end of the year.  Training today’s employees is expected to last six to eight months. It is of the utmost importance to Ekornes that the staff is highly trained before hiring additional groups of employees.
